There is no single U.S. “trade license” that covers every occupation and location. A school certificate, industry certification, apprentice registration, journeyman license and contractor license answer different questions. Identify the exact work you want to do before deciding which credential applies.
Three questions that prevent expensive mistakes
- Where will you work? Requirements may sit at state, county or municipal level.
- What work and role? An employee working under supervision and an owner offering contracting services may need different credentials.
- Which authority decides? Read the licensing board or department’s current requirements, not just a school’s summary.
Published state guides
Our launch coverage is deliberately specific: the Texas electrical and air-conditioning routes below link to the responsible Texas authority. We do not claim complete coverage of all 50 states. For any other location, use the official CareerOneStop license finder as a starting point, then confirm the result directly with the issuing authority.
- Texas electrician licensing routes
- Texas air-conditioning and refrigeration licensing
- Federal EPA Section 608 certification
Keep the documents that support your route
Before starting a program or job, ask how experience hours are recorded, who can sign them, and whether the training counts toward the credential you intend to pursue. Keep dated copies of official instructions, employment records and program documents. Experience accepted for one license or jurisdiction may not transfer automatically to another.
Verify again before applying
Rules, fees, examination procedures and accepted experience can change. Each guide states its source-check date. The issuing authority’s current application instructions control the process. This website provides educational information and does not issue licenses, approve training or determine your eligibility.
Check the source of each requirement
The Texas examples identify a distinction between earlier electrical examination eligibility and the experience threshold for a license. A provider’s summary should be checked against the responsible authority.
